An orthopedic surgeon can X-rays determine a scoliosis and measure the degree of bend. By repeating these X-rays at a later date, the orthopedist can determine whether the scoliosis is changing and will choose the type of therapy based on this. The angle measurement is performed in Cobb’s Angle.

At each visit to the orthopedist, the curvature of the spine is measured. This is done by drawing the angle of Cobb(name for angle in the spine) on the photo. The orthopedist draws lines right through the two most tilted vertebrae. The perpendiculars to it form Cobb’s angle. Measuring that angle at each visit determines whether the scoliosis worsens or remains stable.

First of all, a general inspection of the spine is done. After that, research will take place by means of X-ray/CT scan and or MRI. In addition, you will be examined for any symptoms of associated conditions. A scoliosis is a 3D rotational deformation of the spine, so all surfaces must be properly imaged. Finally, you will be physically examined at every consultation: the asymmetry of the shoulders and flank and the severity of the gibbus (rotation of the ribs/thorax) provide indications of any worsening of the curvature.
