René Castelein Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion

On Friday 4 September, medical department head of orthopedics and orthopedic surgeon René Castelein said goodbye to UMC Utrecht after more than eighteen years. During his retirement he was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

Castelein received the award for what he has meant to UMC Utrecht and in particular to his patients, the orthopedics department and countless young orthopedic and PhD students.

Improving care
René is regarded nationally and internationally as an authority in the field of pediatric vertebral orthopedics, especially when it comes to the cause and treatment of scoliosis. Even more important is his unwavering and long-standing commitment to improving care for this particular patient group. Under his leadership, a leading clinic has emerged, where many innovations and improvement initiatives have been developed. René operates in a large network of national and international healthcare professionals and scientists.

Broad social impact
From his clear vision of his field, Castelein has given the Orthopedics department of the UMC Utrecht a highly specialized academic profile during his long period as department head. This has led to numerous publications, promotions, recognitions and gas professorships around the world. His insights have laid the foundation for a number of groundbreaking orthopedic innovations in dynamic implants and 3D printing technology. This has directly improved care for many complex patients. His efforts have therefore had a broad social impact and will only have more impact.
