Start consultation hour for scoliosis patients in Dutch Scoliosis Center in Zeist

Utrecht, March 12, 2021 – From Friday 12 March, patients of the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital (WKZ) can visit the Dutch Scoliosis Center in Zeist for consultations with idiopathic scoliosis patients. A collaboration in which non-operative scoliosis care takes place in one location. Orthopedic surgeon Tom Schlösser: “Together with the orthopedists from the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, specialized physiotherapists and brace makers, we offer intensive support in an attractive setting outside the hospital”.

Right care in the right place
The Dutch Scoliosis Center was co-founded by scoliosis specialist professor René Castelein: “We are letting go of the idea in which non-operative scoliosis care should take place within the walls of the hospital. Because we seamlessly connect the care, we strive for optimal therapy compliance and outcome.”

Broad social impact
In children and teenagers who are still growing, we try to inhibit further increase in the bend with a brace (corset). This is to prevent back surgery. “The 3D night brace is relatively new, which we are the first to use in the Netherlands. This gives children the opportunity to only wear a brace at night, so no longer during the day when they have to go to school. In addition, we are also increasingly using 3D ultrasound instead of X-rays to continue to monitor the course of scoliosis.”

Scoliosis is a curvature of the back that can increase significantly, especially during the growth spurt. This is also known as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Patients with scoliosis regularly visit orthopedic surgeons, specialized physiotherapists and brace makers (orthopedic instrument makers).
